The Salar de Uyuni in Southern Bolivia is the largest salt flat on the planet - about the size of Jamaica. It is also the highest - 12,018'. It also contains 50% to 70% of the known lithium reserves. But those reserves are untouched.
I was advised that taking your own vehicle onto the salt flats is obviously very hard on the undercarriage, and I would have had no idea where to go anyway. So I joined a tour group that consisted of a Canadian couple, and Austrian couple, and a young man from Japan who was deaf and mute. Very gutsy for him to be traveling in Latin America alone.
The Salar is also famous for taking reflective photos. I got carried away.
